I prefer VLC over parole. Just install VLC does not help when parole is still the default video player.
What you have to do is run a script that exists in the directory "/usr/share/vlc/utils/" named video-vlc-default.sh
When you run this script VLC becomes the default video player.
Do you also want VLC as the default audio player you have to run the file audio-vlc-default.sh in the directory "/usr/share/vlc/utils/".
